I knew that face.
Not from the restaurant.

From a hospital corridor three years ago, the night my career ended.
His name was Victor Laine.
He had been a pharmaceutical consultant then.
Soft hands.
Expensive watch.
The kind of man who smiled while he destroyed you.
He was smiling at me exactly like that now.
I set the bottle down carefully so no one would notice.
"She needs to leave," Victor said, his voice smooth and quiet.
"The children are stable.
We don't need a waitress making medical decisions."
Damien didn't look at him.
He was still watching me.
"What did you find?" he asked.
The room went very still.
Victor took one step forward.
"Damien.
She's nobody.
Let security handleβ"
"I wasn't talking to you."
Victor stopped.
I looked at Damien.
His eyes were steady.
Patient.
The kind of patient that made grown men confess things they never planned to say.
"The powder in that bottle," I said carefully.
"I've seen it before."
Victor's jaw tightened.
"It's not formula residue," I said.
"And it's not from this kitchen."
Damien turned slowly toward Victor.
And Victor's hand moved toward his jacket pocket.
