Chapter 2: What Grandma Kept Safe

Marcus's hands were shaking as he broke the seal.
Vanessa laughed — short and sharp.
"Whatever that child wrote, it doesn't change a single thing.
You are not her father, Marcus.
You never were."
Maya didn't flinch.
She stood perfectly still, watching him.
The first thing he pulled out wasn't a letter.
It was a photograph.
Marcus stared at it.
His face went pale.
Then something shifted in his eyes — not sadness.
Something older.
Something that had been waiting a long time.
"Where did you get this?" he whispered.
Maya said quietly, "She kept it.
All these years.
Grandma kept it safe for me."
Vanessa stepped forward.
"What is that?
What are you two—"
"Don't." Maya's voice was calm.
Firm.
"You don't get to talk right now, Mom."
The room had gone completely still.
Other families nearby had stopped pretending not to listen.
Marcus turned the photograph over.
There was handwriting on the back.
Just a few words.
But when he read them, his hand came up slowly and covered his mouth.
Vanessa's eyes darted between them.
For the first time all day, she looked uncertain.
"Marcus—" she started.
He looked up at her.
And the expression on his face made her stop mid-sentence.
There was still something else inside the envelope.
---
What was written on the back of that photograph — and what else is hidden inside that envelope?
The moment that follows changes everything.
