Chapter 2: The Smile on the Screen

The room went dead silent as the footage played.

Every eye locked onto that screen.

Vanessa's smile vanished.

The video showed everything — her reaching for the punch bowl, the deliberate pour, the quick step back, and then that smile.

That cold, satisfied smile right before she turned and pointed at Mia.

"That's not what happened," Vanessa said.

Her voice came out thin.

Shaky.

Adrian didn't even look at her.

He was watching the screen with his jaw tight and his hands balled at his sides.

"Adrian, I can explain—"

"Don't." His voice was quiet.

That was worse than shouting.

Mia was still crying softly against my shoulder.

I held her close and watched Vanessa's face cycle through panic, then calculation, then something colder.

Then she did something no one expected.

She turned to the crowd and laughed.

"You're all really going to believe a grainy video over me?"

A few guests shifted uncomfortably.

One woman near the back pulled out her phone.

That's when I noticed something.

Vanessa wasn't looking at the screen anymore.

She was looking at someone standing near the door.

Someone who had gone very, very still.

Someone who clearly already knew exactly what she had done.

What Mia's father did next — and who was standing at that door — changes everything.
