Chapter 2: The Photograph on Claire’s Phone

Mr.
Hale’s voice dropped.
“Do not confront Vanessa.
The final transfer was made ten minutes ago.”
My fingers tightened around the phone.
“From which account?”
Before he could answer, someone rattled the locked door.
“Claire?” Daniel called.
“Why is Vanessa telling everyone you canceled the wedding?”
Lena and I exchanged a look.
“I never canceled anything,” I said.
My mother went pale.
“She was texting someone when she left.”
Mr.
Hale spoke again.
“Claire, put me on speaker.”
I did.
“The money Vanessa transferred came from Daniel’s company account,” he said.
“But she used your name and electronic signature.”
Daniel heard every word through the door.
“That’s impossible,” he said.
“Claire doesn’t have access to that account.”
“Exactly,” Mr.
Hale replied.
“Someone wanted you to believe she did.”
Then my phone lit up with a message from Vanessa.
YOU SHOULD HAVE WALKED AWAY WHEN I GAVE YOU THE CHANCE.
A second message appeared—a photograph of Daniel embracing Vanessa outside a hotel.
My knees nearly gave way.
Daniel pounded on the door.
“Claire, whatever she sent you, let me explain!”
Before I could move, the venue doors opened downstairs.
Heavy footsteps crossed the lobby, and Vanessa suddenly screamed, “You weren’t supposed to come here!”
Mr.
Hale went silent.
Then he whispered, “Claire, don’t open that door.
The person Vanessa fears most has arrived.”
