Chapter 1: The Pendant on the Marble
Victoria poured an entire tray of wine over my uniform.
Then she shoved me into the cart.
"You don't belong with people like us."
Before I could leave, she ripped the necklace from my neck.
I reached for it.
"Give it back."
She dropped it onto the marble.
Then crushed it beneath her heel.
William suddenly stepped forward.
"Enough!"
Victoria fell back beside the shattered display.
But William wasn't looking at her.
He was staring at my broken pendant.
He picked it up.
"Where did you get this?"
Then he opened it.
Inside was an old photo of himself.
Holding a newborn baby girl.
His hands started shaking.
He looked at me again.
And this time, he whispered my name.
