Chapter 2: The Footage

The room went dead silent.

Victoria's hand dropped.

Eleanor took a step back.

Julian stood frozen, staring at Thomas Sterling like he was seeing a ghost.

Thomas didn't raise his voice.

He didn't have to.

Thomas: I said step away from my daughter.

Victoria recovered first.

Her chin lifted.

Victoria: Mr.

Sterling, this is a private family matter.

Your daughter was found near my missing jewelry and—

Thomas: Arthur.

Arthur Vance stepped forward and placed a tablet on the table.

The screen showed clear camera footage — timestamp, angle, everything.

Arthur: The footage shows exactly who entered that room.

And it wasn't Elena.

Julian turned slowly toward his mother.

Something shifted in his face.

Julian: Mother…

that's our hallway camera.

Victoria's expression didn't crack.

But her eyes moved — just once — toward Eleanor.

Elena watched that look pass between them and felt something cold settle in her chest.

This wasn't the first time they had done something like this.

Eleanor suddenly moved toward the door.

Thomas: Officer.

A uniformed officer stepped into the doorway.

Eleanor stopped.

Then Arthur opened a second file on the tablet and held it up for Julian to see.

Julian's face went pale.

Julian: What is this?

Arthur: That is the question, isn't it.
