Chapter 2: What the Wardrobe Held

Marcello looked down at Lily.

She wasn't laughing.

She wasn't playing.

She was completely serious.

He took her small hand and said quietly, "Okay, baby.

Show me."

The glamorous woman — her name was Diane — moved fast.

Too fast.

"This is ridiculous," she said sharply.

"She's a toddler.

She doesn't know what she saw."

But Lily was already climbing the stairs.

Marcello followed.

Diane followed him.

At the top of the staircase, Lily walked straight to the guest room without hesitating.

She pointed at the wardrobe in the corner.

"In there," she said.

"That's where the belly went."

Marcello opened it.

At first he saw nothing.

Just coats.

A spare blanket.

Then Diane grabbed his arm.

Hard.

"Don't," she said.

Her voice had changed completely.

The confidence was gone.

He looked at her face.

And he understood — whatever was in that wardrobe, she had not wanted anyone to find it.

He reached past the coats.

His hand touched something soft.

Rounded.

Unmistakably shaped.

He pulled it out slowly.

It was a prosthetic pregnancy belly.

The room went completely silent.

Then from behind them both, a voice spoke.

A voice Marcello recognized immediately.

*"I've been looking for you, Diane."*
