Chapter 2: The Secret in the Blue Bag

Marcello held out his hand.
“Show me, Lily.”
The glamorous woman stepped between them.
“This is ridiculous.
She’s only a child.”
Lily clung to her mother’s dress.
“I saw her take it off.
She put it in the blue bag.”
The woman’s face went pale.
“What blue bag?” Marcello asked.
“There is no bag,” she snapped.
“Get these people out of here.”
But Lily was already leading Marcello upstairs.
Her mother followed, while the woman hurried after them, begging him to stop.
Lily entered a small dressing room and pointed beneath a table.
“There.”
Marcello pulled out a blue garment bag.
Inside was a flesh-colored pregnancy pad—the same shape as the belly the woman had displayed all evening.
His hands began to shake.
“You told me you were carrying my child.”
“I can explain,” she whispered.
Then an envelope slipped from the bag.
Marcello opened it and found a photograph, a plane ticket, and official papers bearing a name he did not recognize.
Before he could read them, a man appeared in the doorway.
“Marcello,” he said, staring at the terrified woman, “she isn’t who you think she is.”
