Chapter 7: The Vote That Broke the Lie

Beatrice called the board to order in the ballroom.

“Until this matter is settled, no one leaves with company records.”

Julian stood at the head table.

“At midnight, the proxy became active.

I am chairman now.”

George opened the sealed folder.

“Only if the proxy is valid.”

Hale recovered his composure.

“It bears Marcello’s signature and a notarized witness statement.”

Marcello placed the trust deed beside it.

“My father’s instructions say any transfer between family members requires two independent trustees.”

Julian pointed at Hale.

“Daniel was one.”

“The deed says independent,” Beatrice replied.

“He represented both of you.”

Hale snapped his case shut.

“That is an interpretation.”

“No,” George said.

“It is one syllable too many for your comfort.”

Vanessa moved toward Marcello.

“If I give you everything, will you protect me from Julian?”

Julian struck the table with his palm.

“You’re my wife.”

“I was your tool.”

“You were paid.”

“And you kept the ledger.”

His face changed.

Claire lifted her phone.

“The ledger from Room 614?”

Vanessa nodded.

“Julian hid it in Daniel’s case.”

Hale grabbed the case.

Marcello caught the handle.

“Open it,” Marcello said.

“You have no authority.”

“Then you won’t mind waiting for investigators.”

Julian leaned toward Vanessa.

“If I fall, you fall with me.”

She removed the gold ring from her chain and dropped it before him.

“You told me Marcello was cold and selfish,” she said.

“You said taking his company would protect the family.

But he defended a woman he barely knew while you threatened her child.”

“You wore that false belly willingly.”

“Yes.

And I will answer for it.”

Hale ran toward the service corridor with the case.

George blocked the door while a hotel guard took the handle.

“Open it,” Beatrice repeated.

The case clicked apart.

Inside were payment records, the original insurance packet, and a page bearing Marcello’s signature with blank space above it.

Marcello held it under the ballroom light.

“You lifted my signature from this page.”

Hale’s lips tightened.

“You cannot prove who added the text.”

Claire pressed play again.

Hale’s recorded voice answered him.

“I’ll print the proxy over the signature page.

The notary owes Julian too much money to object.”

The ballroom went silent.

Two financial investigators entered with hotel security.

One displayed identification.

“Julian Moretti, Daniel Hale, we have authorization to secure these records.”

Julian reached for the flash drive from the bank box.

Sarah caught the box first and passed it to Marcello.

“You always need someone else to save you,” Julian said.

Marcello inserted the drive into the ballroom projector.

Their father appeared on the screen, thinner than Marcello remembered.

“If you are watching this, Julian has challenged the succession.

I hoped he would change.

I prepared for the possibility that he would not.”

Julian shouted, “Turn it off!”

The recording continued.

“Marcello, you did not inherit Moretti House because you were the firstborn.

You inherited it because you were the son who returned what was not his, even when nobody was watching.”

Julian lunged for the projector cable.

A guard stopped him.

“You chose him over your own bl00d!” Julian cried.

Their father’s image looked directly into the camera.

“Family is not proved by bl00d.

It is proved by what a person protects when greed offers more.”

Julian stared at Marcello.

“Did you hear him?” he said.

“Ask them why he used those words.

Ask George whose child you really are.”

Marcello slowly turned toward George.

George lowered his eyes.

Julian smiled as the investigators moved closer.

“That’s right, brother,” he said.

“Father’s last secret was you.”
