Chapter 2: Four Words on a Screen

Brittany didn't even lower her voice.

"Daniel Carter?" She laughed, turning to her friends.

"We went to school together.

He used to think he'd be somebody."

Daniel smiled politely and took their orders.

He didn't flinch.

He didn't argue.

He just wrote everything down and walked away.

That's when Brittany made her mistake.

She called him back in front of the whole table.

"Actually — can you make sure someone competent brings our food?

I'd hate for anything to go wrong."

Her friends giggled.

One of them filmed it.

A young waitress nearby had heard everything.

She walked straight to Brittany's table, set down a glass of water, and said quietly, "Do you know who he is?"

Brittany smirked.

"A waiter."

"He's Daniel Carter," the girl said.

"He owns four restaurants in this city.

This is one of them.

He works the floor on weekends because he likes to."

The table went silent.

Brittany's smile didn't fall right away.

It faded slowly, like she was still trying to find a way out.

Then her phone buzzed.

It was her husband.

One message.

Four words.
