Chapter 2: The Key Beneath the Seat

My lawyer, Gerald, called me into his office three days after Diane sold the Mustang.
He slid a folder across the desk without saying a word.
Inside was a trust document — signed by my mother Rebecca two months before she passed.
My name was on it.
So was a number I couldn't stop staring at.
$2,100,000.
"Diane knew about this," Gerald said quietly.
"She had a copy of this document before the car ever left your mother's driveway."
I couldn't breathe.
"She sold the Mustang because of what was hidden inside it," he continued.
"There was a key taped beneath the driver's seat.
We believe that key opens a safety deposit box — one registered solely in your name."
I drove straight to Diane's house.
She opened the door and her face changed the moment she saw me.
"You need to calm down," she said.
"Where is the key, Diane?"
She crossed her arms.
"Your mother wasn't the saint you think she was.
There are things about Rebecca that would change how you see everything."
"What things?"
She looked at me for a long moment — then said something about my father that I never expected to hear.

What Diane revealed about Rebecca stopped me cold.
