The silence lasted maybe five seconds.

Then my mother, Eleanor, slowly set down her coffee cup.

She didn't look at me.

She looked at her nails.

"Dave," she said quietly, "you're being dramatic."

Something in me went very still.

"Dramatic," I repeated.

"She's not fragile.

Women have been having babies and running households for centuries." Eleanor finally looked up, and her eyes were completely calm.

"I did it.

Your sisters did it.

Lucy needs to toughen up."

Sarah and Jessica exchanged a quick glance.

Chloe stared at the floor.

I took one step forward.

"Lucy is eight months pregnant.

It is ten o'clock at night.

She can barely stand."

"Then she should have finished earlier," Sarah said.

That was the moment I realized this wasn't ignorance.

They knew exactly what they were doing.

Every single one of them.

I turned toward the kitchen doorway.

Lucy was standing there.

She had heard everything.

One hand pressed against the doorframe.

The other rested on her stomach.

She wasn't crying.

That was the worst part.

She just looked at me with those exhausted eyes, like she had stopped expecting anything different a long time ago.

Then my mother said four words that made my bl00d run cold.

"She knew what she married."
