Chapter 2: The Message Daniel Thought Was Gone

My grandfather stepped between us and fixed Daniel with a cold stare.

“You didn’t merely humiliate my granddaughter,” he said.

“You exposed the real reason you wanted to marry her.”

Daniel’s face turned pale.

“This has nothing to do with business.”

“Doesn’t it?” Grandfather asked.

“Tomorrow, she receives controlling ownership of Sterling Enterprises.

Your family’s company receives nothing.”

Daniel’s father jumped to his feet.

“You promised us that merger!”

“I promised it on one condition—that Daniel loved and respected my granddaughter.”

My legs trembled as Grandfather placed a sealed envelope in my hands.

“This arrived at my office this morning,” he said.

“Read the first message aloud.”

I opened it and saw an email Daniel had sent his father: “Once the wedding is over, the Sterling shares will belong to us.”

“That’s fake!” Daniel shouted.

Grandfather pointed to the second page.

“Then you won’t mind her reading the rest.”

Before I could turn it over, the woman beside Daniel grabbed his arm.

“You told me those messages were deleted,” she whispered.

Then a voice from the back of the room said, “They weren’t—and I brought the originals.”
