Chapter 2: The Name on the Screen

The groom shoved aside the broken timber and struggled to his feet.

“What are you talking about, Mom?”

The bride grabbed his arm.

“Don’t listen to her.

She came here to destroy us.”

His mother reached into her soaked jacket and pulled out a sealed envelope.

“Then ask your bride why she visited your father’s attorney three days ago.”

The bride’s face went pale.

“That has nothing to do with today.”

“Nothing?” the older woman snapped.

“You tried to make him sign away his rights before the ceremony.”

“That’s a lie!” the bride shouted.

“She has been trying to turn you against me since the day we met.”

The groom stared between them.

“What rights?

What did you ask me to sign?”

Before the bride could answer, a phone buzzed beneath the fallen roses.

The groom picked it up—and realized it belonged to his mother.

A message glowed across the screen:

“Keep them from signing anything.

He still doesn’t know who truly owns the house.”

The groom’s expression changed.

“Mom…

who sent this?”

His mother snatched for the phone, but the bride stepped between them.

“No,” she said, her voice suddenly calm.

“Read the name out loud.”

The groom looked at the sender—and froze.
