Chapter 2: The Signature at the Bottom

**— PART 2 —**

The champagne glasses were still rolling across the ground when Marcus grabbed his wife by the arm and pulled her away from his daughter.

"Don't you ever touch her again," he said, his voice low and shaking.

His wife yanked her arm free.

"You're making a scene.

Everyone is watching."

"Good," Marcus said.

"Let them watch."

The police officer stepped between them and held out the open case file.

Inside was a printed university letter — and at the bottom, a signature.

Marcus stared at it.

His daughter's name.

Written in someone else's hand.

"Sir," the officer said quietly, "the university confirmed the rejection letter was submitted online.

The account used to send it was registered under this address."

The wife went very still.

Marcus turned to her slowly.

"You did this from our house."

She said nothing.

Then his daughter's voice came through, small and exhausted: "Dad…

that's not all she did."

Marcus looked at her.

"What do you mean?"

She wiped her face with the back of her hand and whispered: "The scholarship wasn't the only thing she took."

The wife's eyes snapped to the girl with a look that could have stopped a clock.
