Chapter 1: The Girl Who Babysat for a Wedding Dress

"You called security on my daughter?" Marcus's voice sliced through the cheerful chatter of the garden reception like a blade.

He stood tall in his deep maroon tuxedo, his hand wrapped firmly around the small, trembling shoulder of his nine-year-old daughter, Maya.

Behind them, a hired security officer shifted uncomfortably, clearly wishing he were anywhere else.

Vanessa, glowing in a champagne-colored strapless gown with a sparkling diamond necklace resting against her collarbone, didn't even flinch.

She smoothed her sleek bob and adjusted her bouquet, offering a cool, dismissive sigh.

"Marcus, look at her," Vanessa whispered, her voice dripping with artificial sympathy as she gestured vaguely toward the little girl.

"You want her walking in dressed like that?

In front of all our guests?

Don't you think it reflects poorly on us?" 😤

"Don't talk about her like that!" Marcus snapped, his jaw clenched tight as his dreadlocks swayed with his sudden motion.

Maya squeezed her father's hand tighter, her big brown eyes welling up with tears as she looked up at him.

"Dad, it's okay...

it's the nicest dress I have," she whispered softly, her faint voice carrying across the quieted crowd.

"I babysat for two whole months just to buy it so I could come to your wedding." 😢

Marcus felt a sickening knot form in his stomach.

He dropped to one knee, bringing himself eye-level with his daughter, completely ignoring the whispering wedding guests gathered under the white floral arches.

"Baby, you look beautiful," he said softly, smoothing down her hair.

But then his brow furrowed in deep confusion.

"Wait...

why did you have to work to buy a dress?

I send money every single month specifically for your clothes and school." 💔

Maya blinked in complete bewilderment.

"What money?"

Marcus froze.

The silence around them felt suddenly suffocating.

He slowly stood up, turning his head to lock eyes with Vanessa, his expression shifting from confusion to raw rage.

"Vanessa," Marcus growled, his voice dangerously low.

"Where is her money?" 🔥

Vanessa's composure faltered for a fraction of a second.

She stepped closer to Marcus, her eyes nervously darting toward the wedding guests who were now blatantly staring.

"Honey, please," she murmured under her breath, pressing a manicured hand to his chest.

"Can we please just talk about this after the wedding?

We have a schedule to keep."

"Wait..." Maya's soft voice broke in again, her eyes fixed on the ground before looking up at her father.

"Grandma said you stopped sending money a long time ago." 😨

Marcus felt the air leave his lungs.

"I never stopped," he stammered, staring at his daughter in utter horror.

"I've been transferring it directly into the account every single month!"

"She said..." Maya swallowed hard, her little chest heaving.

"She said you needed the money for your new family now, so you couldn't help us anymore."

Marcus stood paralyzed, his eyes wide in absolute shock as the horrific truth crashed down on him, his gaze slowly locking onto his new bride.
