Chapter 2: The Name She Was Never Meant to Hear

Part 2 ⬇️

The sound of breaking glass brought two of Ethan's men running inside.

I stood frozen in the garden, Noah already gone, the gates sealed, and no explanation from anyone.

Ethan turned to me.

"Stay here."

"What's happening?"

He didn't answer.

He was already moving toward the mansion, phone pressed to his ear, speaking in a low voice I couldn't follow.

I waited.

Then one of the guards came back out, his face tight.

"Mr.

Caldwell wants you inside.

Now."

The hallway was quiet in the wrong way.

Three men stood outside a closed door on the second floor.

Ethan was already inside.

I could hear his voice through the wall — low, controlled, the kind of calm that feels more dangerous than shouting.

Then Margaret's voice.

"I was protecting him."

"From what?" Ethan said.

Silence.

"From his mother?"

My chest went cold.

Noah's mother was supposed to be d\*ad.

That's what everyone at the estate had told me when I arrived.

A car accident.

Three years ago.

No survivors.

But the way Ethan said it — not like a memory.

Like a threat.

The door opened.

Margaret stepped out, and when she saw me standing in the hallway, something crossed her face that wasn't guilt.

It was fear.

She looked past me toward the staircase.

And whispered a name I had never heard before.

---

What Margaret whispered — and who that name belongs to — changes everything.
