Chapter 6: The Lie That Almost Won

Lena held the page beneath the alley light.

“Tell me what your father ordered.”

Matteo looked at Sophie, then at Ruth.

“Not in front of her.”

“You don’t decide where the truth is spoken anymore.”

Victor led Sophie inside the neighboring bakery with Ruth.

When the door closed, Matteo removed his silver ring.

“My father learned Nora had copied the ledger.

He ordered me to recover it.”

“And you sent men after her.”

“I sent men to bring her to me.”

“She called you because she was frightened.”

“I told her to wait in Room 614.

I thought I could move her before my father arrived.”

“But you chose the treaty.”

Matteo’s hand closed around the ring.

“I chose to delay ten minutes.

Nora left the room alone, and her car went off the river road.”

Lena’s hand came up.

She stopped it inches from his face, shaking so hard the letter rattled.

“You don’t get my anger that easily,” she said.

“You get to live with my words.

My sister asked for help, and you calculated the cost.”

“I did.”

“And Sophie grew up without her mother because ten minutes mattered more to you than Nora.”

“Yes.”

A police car turned into the alley.

Two officers stepped out with Alisandre behind them.

“There she is,” Alisandre said.

“Lena Carter stole a restricted substance from hotel storage and attempted to put it in Matteo’s glass.”

“That’s a lie,” Lena said.

Alisandre handed an officer her phone.

The screen showed Lena kneeling beside the table, her hand closing around a dark object.

“The missing recording,” Matteo said.

“A copy survived.” Alisandre smiled.

“It clearly shows Lena taking the capsule.”

“It begins after you dropped it,” Lena said.

“Can you prove that?”

Victor came through the bakery door.

Alisandre turned to him.

“Mr.

Hale, who erased the original recording?”

Victor looked at Lena, then at the message flashing on his phone.

His lips parted.

“I did,” he said.

“Who asked you to?”

Victor lowered his head.

“Lena Carter.”

Lena stared at him.

“Victor?”

“My son’s treatment was canceled,” he whispered.

“I’m sorry.”

An officer took Lena’s wrists and guided her toward the car.

Matteo stepped forward, but another officer blocked him.

Alisandre approached Lena.

“Sign a statement saying you acted alone.

Sophie keeps her home, and Victor’s son keeps his doctors.”

“You want me to confess to something I didn’t do.”

“I want you to understand what resistance costs.”

Lena looked through the bakery window.

Sophie stood with both palms against the glass.

“I will not teach that child to survive by kneeling.”

Alisandre’s voice dropped.

“Then she may lose you too.”

A second black car stopped across the alley.

The cousin who had broken Matteo’s phone climbed out, raising both hands.

“My name is Luca Vitali,” he called.

“And I sent Lena the message.”

Alisandre froze.

Luca held up a flash drive.

“I also kept the part of the recording my cousin thought she erased.”

He pressed play on his phone.

May you like

Alisandre’s voice filled the alley.

“Use the same river route we used for Nora Carter.”
