Chapter 5: The Son He Chose

We moved into a private conference room so the girls would not have to stand in the hallway.

Victor placed the yellow envelope in front of me.

Elaine remained by the door.

“That letter has nothing to do with the trust.”

Victor looked at her.

“It explains why Richard wrote the equal-treatment clause.”

“Connor,” Paige said, “you don’t have to read it here.”

Emma pulled out the chair beside mine.

“I want to hear what Grandpa said.”

I opened the envelope with shaking hands.

Inside was one sheet addressed to Victor, one to Elaine, and one marked for me.

My lawyer touched the final page.

“Read only what you’re ready to read.”

I unfolded it.

“Connor,” I began, but my voice broke.

Paige covered my hand with hers.

“I’ll read it if you want.”

I nodded.

She read aloud.

“‘A father is not decided by a laboratory or by the worst mistake in a marriage.

A father is the man who stays, teaches a boy to ride a bicycle, sits beside him when he is sick, and worries about him long after the house is quiet.’”

Elaine looked toward the window.

Paige continued.

“‘I knew before Connor was born.

I signed his birth certificate because he was my son then, and he remained my son every day after.’”

Emma began to cry.

Riley climbed into my lap, though she had almost outgrown it.

“Grandpa chose you,” Emma said.

I pressed my face against Riley’s hair.

“Yes, sweetheart.

He did.”

Victor wiped his eyes.

“Richard made me promise to protect that letter until it was needed.”

Elaine spun around.

“He humiliated me by writing it.”

“He protected Connor from being humiliated by you.”

“You have no right to judge my marriage.”

“No,” Victor said.

“But I can testify about the trust.”

The bailiff appeared at the door.

“The judge is ready to resume.”

Back in court, my lawyer submitted the letter with the trust instructions.

Elaine’s attorney objected, but the judge allowed Victor to explain why the documents had been preserved.

Elaine gripped the edge of the table.

“My private life is not evidence of financial misconduct.”

“No,” I said.

“The false records are.”

She looked at me.

“Withdraw this, Connor.

I will tell the entire family who your biological father was.”

Paige stood beside me.

“Tell anyone you like.

Richard Walker was his father.”

My lawyer placed the original instructions on the projector.

One sentence appeared on the courtroom screen.

ALL CHILDREN RECOGNIZED AND LOVED BY MY CHILDREN SHALL BE TREATED AS MY GRANDCHILDREN, WITHOUT DISTINCTION.

The judge faced Elaine.

“Your husband anticipated this exact dispute.”

“He was trying to punish me.”

“He was trying to prevent you from punishing children.”

Daniel rose at the back of the courtroom.

“Your Honor, I have something you need to hear.”

Melissa grabbed his jacket.

“Daniel, don’t.”

He pulled free and walked toward my lawyer.

“After the petition was filed, I asked Melissa where the money came from.

She called Elaine while my phone was recording.”

“You recorded me?” Melissa asked.

“I recorded the truth because you kept changing it.”

Elaine’s attorney closed his eyes.

“Do not play anything until we review it.”

Daniel handed over the phone.

“There’s a message where Elaine tells Melissa what to write on the reimbursement forms.”

The judge ordered a copy preserved.

My lawyer connected the phone to the courtroom speaker.

Elaine’s voice filled the room.

“Use Riley’s initials for the first withdrawal.

Connor never checks paperwork.

For the second, write ‘educational support.’ By the time he notices, the account will be closed.”

Elaine rose so quickly her chair tipped over.

“That recording was altered.”

Daniel looked at her.

“Then why did you call me last night and offer to pay my mortgage if I erased it?”

The judge’s gaze sharpened.

“Last night?”

My lawyer’s phone vibrated.

He read the message, then turned the screen toward me.

“The trust account was accessed this morning,” he whispered.

“How much?”

May you like

He looked toward Elaine.

“Everything that remained.”
