Chapter 2: The Name on the False Invoice

The judge lifted the highlighted page.
“Connor, did you authorize this withdrawal under Riley’s name?”
“No, Your Honor.
I had never even heard of the trust.”
My mother gripped her lawyer’s sleeve.
“It was an administrative mistake.”
“Then explain this,” the judge replied.
“The medical invoice carries Connor’s signature, but the bank authorization was completed from your home address.”
My stomach tightened.
The signature looked almost perfect—but it wasn’t mine.
My mother’s lawyer stood quickly.
“We need a recess.”
The judge ignored him and turned another page.
“The clinic named on this invoice has confirmed that Riley was never a patient there.”
A murmur swept through the courtroom.
My mother’s calm expression cracked.
Then the judge asked, “Where did the money actually go?”
The auditor rose behind me and handed the clerk a sealed report.
“We traced the transfer yesterday.”
My mother spun toward Melissa, who was sitting in the back row beside Daniel.
Melissa’s face had gone white.
“Don’t say anything,” my mother whispered.
But the courtroom microphone caught every word.
The judge looked sharply at her.
“Why shouldn’t she say anything?”
Before my mother could answer, Melissa stood with shaking hands.
“Because Riley wasn’t the only child whose name we used.”
