Chapter 2: What Bonnie Already Knew

The bronze doors closed with a soft, final sound.
Inside, my mother stopped walking and looked around the entrance hall in silence.
Her hands were still trembling from the kitchen.
I guided her to the nearest chair and knelt in front of her.
"You should have called me," I said quietly.
"You were working," she whispered.
"I didn't want to cause trouble."
That sentence nearly broke me.
This woman had worked three jobs to raise me alone.
She had sold the only land her own mother left her so I could finish my degree.
And she was apologizing for causing trouble.
I was still holding Donovan when my phone rang.
It was Caden.
"Taylor, open this door right now.
You have no right to cut off the utilities.
I'll call a lawyer."
"Go ahead," I said.
"Ask him to explain whose name is on the deed to that house first."
Silence.
Then Bonnie's voice came through in the background, sharp and low.
"Caden.
We need to talk.
Now."
Something in her tone stopped me cold.
She didn't sound angry anymore.
She sounded afraid.
And that was the moment I realized — Bonnie already knew something about this mansion.
Something she had never told her son.
Something that changed everything about why she had treated my mother the way she did.
