Richard Sterling thought he was about to surprise Sophie.
He had canceled an important meeting, bought her new toys, and rushed home early for one simple reason:
He wanted one night with his little girl.
But the moment he stepped into his mansion's kitchen, the gifts slipped from his hands.
Sophie was sitting barefoot on the marble floor.
Crying.
Her tiny fingers were trembling as she scooped food from the dog's bowl and pushed it into her mouth.
"Sophie?!"
Richard ran to her and dropped to his knees.
The little girl looked up at him with huge gray eyes drowning in tears.
Her cheeks were red.
Her nose was pink from crying.
Her lower lip wouldn't stop trembling.
Then she grabbed his suit and broke down in his arms.
"Daddy…
I was so hungry."
Richard went completely still.
"When was the last time you ate?"
Sophie lowered her eyes.
"Yesterday morning."
His stomach dropped.
Then she whispered the words that turned his heartbreak into rage.
"Miss Vanessa wouldn't let me eat."
Richard slowly turned toward the hallway.
For months, he had believed his daughter was safe inside one of the most luxurious homes money could buy.
But Sophie had been living a completely different life whenever he was away.
And the dog bowl wasn't the worst thing he was about to discover.
Because later that night, Sophie pointed toward a locked door at the end of the hallway…
And told her father what Vanessa did to her inside that room.
Richard reached for the handle.
What he found next changed everything.
