Chapter 2: The Bracelet on Her Wrist

— PART 2 —

The door swung open.

Richard stood in the doorway and couldn't move.

It wasn't a storage room.

It wasn't a guest room.

It was Sophie's room — except it had been stripped bare.

No bed.

No toys.

No blankets.

Just a thin mat on the floor and a single dim bulb hanging from the ceiling.

Sophie pressed her face into his shoulder.

"She said I had to sleep in here when I was bad."

"When you were bad?" Richard's voice dropped to almost nothing.

"Sophie…

what did she say you did wrong?"

Sophie was quiet for a long moment.

"She said I talked too much."

Richard's hands were shaking when he pulled out his phone and called his head of security.

"Pull every camera in this house.

Every single one.

Tonight."

He was still standing in that doorway when he heard heels clicking on the marble behind him.

Vanessa's voice came first — smooth, unbothered, almost amused.

"Richard.

You're home early."

He turned around slowly.

She was dressed perfectly.

Glass of wine in hand.

Smiling like nothing in the world was wrong.

Sophie buried her face deeper into her father's neck and went completely still.

That was when Richard noticed something on Vanessa's wrist.

A bracelet he had never seen before.

One that looked exactly like the bracelet that had gone missing from his late wife's jewelry box.

What Vanessa said next — and what the security footage revealed — is worse than anyone expected.
