Chapter 2: The Name on the Screen

"Her name is Lena," Noah sobbed, still reaching back across the ballroom floor.

"She's my real mommy.

She told me not to tell.

But I don't want to lie anymore."

The room erupted in whispers.

Vivi spun around, her eyes locking onto the boy with something that wasn't love.

It was warning.

"Noah, stop it," she said through a tight smile.

"You're confused, sweetheart.

You're tired."

"I'm not confused." His voice was small but certain.

"I remember.

I remember her smell.

I remember her singing to me."

Lena was still on the floor.

She hadn't moved.

One hand pressed to her cheek.

The other pressed flat against the marble as if she needed something solid to hold onto.

Noah's father crossed the room in four steps.

He crouched down in front of her.

"Lena." His voice broke on her name.

"How long have you been in this house?"

She looked up at him.

And the answer in her eyes made him go pale.

Vivi stepped forward.

"Don't you dare—"

"How long?" he repeated, louder now.

Lena opened her mouth.

Before she could speak, Vivi's phone rang.

She glanced at the screen.

Every trace of color left her face.

She rejected the call.

But Noah's father had already seen the name on the screen.

And it was a name that should have been impossible.
