Chapter 5: What Daniel Knew

The library felt smaller after she said it.

Marcus sat with his elbows on his knees and his hands loose between them, looking at the floor.

He didn't speak for a long moment.

"Daniel never mentioned a sister," he finally said.

"He wouldn't have.

He was protecting me." Lena kept her voice low so Noah wouldn't stir.

"Daniel and I — we grew up with very little.

He worked hard.

He was smart.

He got himself into your company's orbit through sheer persistence." She paused.

"He was also the one who found out what Vivi was doing with the Aldren account."

Marcus looked up.

"The Aldren account was closed four years ago.

Internal audit.

We never found the source of the discrepancy."

"You didn't find it because the person who found it first was k*lled before he could bring it to you."

The word landed between them like something physical.

"Daniel wasn't in an accident," Marcus said slowly.

"No."

"The police ruled it—"

"I know what the police ruled." Her voice didn't waver, but her hand tightened slightly on Noah's shoulder.

"I also know what Daniel told me three days before he d*ed.

He called me.

He said he had documents.

He said he was going to take them to you directly because he didn't trust anyone else in the company.

He said—" She stopped.

Swallowed.

"He said if anything happened to him, I should find a way to get close to the truth."

"So you came to work in my house."

"Vivi posted the position herself.

Private household staff, live-in, immediate start." A short, humorless breath.

"I think she thought it was safe.

She thought Daniel had no family.

She thought there was no one left who knew."

"She hired you knowing your last name."

"She hired me because I used my mother's name on the application.

Lena Carver." She looked at him steadily.

"She had no idea who I was.

Not for the first four months."

"And then?"

"And then Noah got sick.

A fever, very high, the middle of the night.

Vivi was traveling.

You were at a conference in Edinburgh.

The nanny agency's emergency line went to voicemail." She looked down at the sleeping boy.

"I stayed up with him for eleven hours.

I sang to him because it was the only thing that helped.

By morning the fever had broken." She was quiet for a moment.

"He called me Mommy for the first time that afternoon.

He was half asleep.

I don't think he even knew he'd said it."

Marcus's face had changed.

The executive composure was gone.

What was underneath it was something rawer and less practiced.

"When did Vivi find out who you were?"

"Six months ago.

She found a photograph.

Daniel and me, when we were teenagers.

I'd kept it in my room." Lena's jaw tightened.

"She came to me that night.

She told me that if I said a word to anyone — to you, to the police, to anyone — she would have Noah taken somewhere I would never find him.

She said she had people who would make sure of it."

"She threatened you with my son."

"She threatened me with her son." The correction was gentle but precise.

"That's how she thinks of him.

Hers.

Completely."

Marcus stood up.

He walked to the window and stood with his back to her for a moment.

His reflection was faint in the dark glass — a man trying to reassemble something that had just been broken into too many pieces to count quickly.

"The name on her phone tonight," he said without turning around.

"Daniel is de@d.

So who was calling?"

Lena hesitated for the first time.

"I don't know for certain.

But Daniel told me he wasn't working alone.

There was someone else inside the company who had seen the same discrepancies.

Someone who went quiet after Daniel d*ed." She paused.

"Someone who may have decided, recently, that staying quiet was no longer safe."

Marcus turned from the window.

"Do you have any of Daniel's documents?"

"Not here." She met his eyes.

"But I know where they are."

From somewhere inside the ballroom, muffled by walls and distance, the string quartet was playing something slow and formal.

It sounded like a different world entirely.

Marcus looked at his sleeping son.

Then he looked at Lena.

"We're leaving tonight," he said.

"All three of us.

And tomorrow morning, you're going to show me where those documents are."

May you like

Lena nodded once.

Then Vivi opened the door.
