Chapter 1: The Father She Chose

Amara believed she was making the right choice.
Graduation day was meant to be simple—two tickets, two important people, one impossible decision.
So when Darius came up to her in the lobby with pride in his eyes and asked for his ticket, she gave him the answer she had already prepared.
She chose her “real” father.
The one connected to her by bl0od.
Not the man who remained.
Not the man who showed up.
Not the man who helped raise her, support her, and get her to that stage.
Darius didn’t shout.
He didn’t plead.
He didn’t make a scene.
That was what made it hurt more.
He just reminded her, softly, of everything he had done—and when he realized her mind was made up, he told her to enjoy her graduation and left alone.
Then came the part she wasn’t prepared for.
Marcus finally arrived.
Not emotional.
Not proud.
Not even fully present.
Just impatient.
Asking how long it would take because he had somewhere else to be.
And in that moment, the difference between a biological father and a real one became impossible to ignore.
Some people give you life.
Some people give you love.
And sometimes the most painful lesson comes the moment you realize you chose the wrong one.
