Chapter 2: The Signature He Wanted

Amara stared at Marcus as he checked his phone again.
“Are you even staying for the ceremony?”
“I said I’d try,” he replied.
“How long does this thing take?”
Her chest tightened.
“Darius planned dinner afterward.
He even ordered the cake I wanted.”
Marcus frowned.
“Then why isn’t he here?”
“Because I gave his ticket to you.”
For one second, Marcus looked surprised.
Then he shrugged.
“That was your decision.”
Before Amara could answer, his phone rang.
He stepped aside, but not far enough.
“Yes, she chose me,” Marcus whispered.
“Once the ceremony is over, I’ll get her signature.”
Amara froze.
“Signature on what?” she asked.
Marcus quickly ended the call.
“Nothing you need to worry about today.”
A woman from the graduation office hurried toward them holding a sealed envelope.
“Amara, Darius asked me to give you this if he didn’t come back.”
Her name was written across the front in his familiar handwriting.
Inside was a letter—and a document carrying both Darius’s name and Marcus’s.
Marcus saw the heading, and all the color drained from his face.
“Give me that,” he demanded, reaching for it.
But Amara stepped back and read the first line aloud.
