Chapter 2: The Folder Behind the Winter Coats

Part 2 ⬇️
I drove home with both hands steady on the wheel.
No tears.
No radio.
Just the quiet I had been swallowing for eight months finally rising up through my chest.
When I got inside, I went straight to the bedroom closet.
Behind my winter coats, in a shoebox I had taped shut last October, was a folder.
Inside that folder was everything.
Bank statements Daniel had no idea I had seen.
A second account he had opened four months before our wedding.
Transfers — small enough not to alarm anyone, large enough to matter — going to the same name every single month.
A woman named Renee.
I had found it by accident.
A paper statement tucked inside a jacket he asked me to take to the dry cleaner.
I didn't confront him.
I just started quietly pulling the thread.
I spread everything across the kitchen table.
Then I called my sister.
"Are you sure?" she asked.
"I've been sure for eight months," I said.
"I just kept hoping I was wrong."
I heard Daniel's truck pull into the driveway at 6:14 pm.
He walked through the front door and stopped.
He looked at the table.
Then at me.
"What is this?" he said slowly.
"Sit down, Daniel."
He didn't move.
Then his phone buzzed.
He glanced at the screen — and the color left his face completely.
