Chapter 4: The Name She Already Knew

I set the phone back on the counter, screen up.

Daniel reached for it.

I stepped back and let him.

He read the message.

Then he set the phone in his pocket and looked at me with an expression I had never seen on him before.

Not guilt.

Not anger.

Something quieter and more deliberate.

"That's not what it looks like."

"She knew you were coming home tonight," I said.

"She knew you'd be walking into this conversation.

How did she know that?"

He said nothing.

"Did you call her from the barbecue?

After I left?"

Still nothing.

"Daniel."

"I texted her," he said.

"I told her you'd walked out.

I didn't know you had all of this waiting."

"But she did." I looked at him.

"She told you not to say anything.

What exactly is she handling?"

He sat back down.

Not because I asked him to.

Because his legs seemed to need the chair.

"It's more complicated than I made it sound," he said.

"I'm listening."

He was quiet for a long time.

The refrigerator hummed.

Somewhere upstairs, a pipe settled in the wall.

"Renee and I — we were together for six years before I met you.

Ava was three when we split.

We never married.

She never wanted to go through the courts, and I didn't either.

So we kept it private."

"And the business?"

"She had an idea for a catering company.

I helped her set it up.

It was supposed to be a clean break — help her get stable, then step back."

"But you didn't step back."

"It got complicated."

I pulled out the chair across from him and sat down.

"Are you still with her?"

The pause was less than two seconds.

It felt much longer.

"No."

"That wasn't a fast answer."

"It's not a simple question."

"It is the simplest question I've asked you tonight." I kept my voice level.

"Are you, right now, in a relationship with Renee Calloway?"

"Not the way you mean."

"Then what way?"

He pressed both hands flat on the table.

"She depends on me.

She's always depended on me.

That's not the same as what you're implying."

"You have a secret account.

A secret business.

A woman who texts you not to talk to your wife." I looked at him.

"What am I supposed to be implying?"

He opened his mouth.

Then my phone rang.

I glanced at the screen.

My sister, Carol.

I answered it.

"I'm still here," I said.

"Good." Carol's voice was careful.

"I need to tell you something before you go any further tonight.

I didn't want to say it earlier because I wasn't sure.

But I'm sure now."

"What is it?"

"I know who Renee Calloway is."

I looked at Daniel.

He was watching my face.

"Tell me," I said.

"She was at your wedding," Carol said.

"She was the woman in the green dress who came with Daniel's cousin.

Do you remember her?

She stayed for the whole reception.

She danced.

She gave a toast."

The room went very still.

I remembered the woman in the green dress.

I remembered thinking she was someone's colleague.

I remembered Daniel introducing her as an old friend.

"She was at our wedding," I said quietly.

Daniel's eyes dropped to the table.

"She wasn't just at the wedding," Carol said.

"I talked to her for almost an hour that night.

She told me she and Daniel had stayed close.

She said she was happy for him." A pause.

"She was crying when she said it."

I set the phone down on the table without ending the call.

"She was at our wedding," I said again.

Not a question this time.

May you like

Daniel said nothing.

"You brought her to our wedding."
