Chapter 2: Three Words

The chairman said nothing at first.

That silence was worse than any shouting.

He looked at his wife — really looked at her — taking in the tears on her face, the cheap dress they had mocked, the way she was trying to make herself small in front of people who had never deserved to be in the same room as her.

His jaw tightened.

Then he turned to the groom.

"You work in my finance division," he said quietly.

"Third floor.

You've been there four years."

The groom couldn't speak.

He just nodded, his collar visibly soaked through.

The bride stepped forward, her voice cracking.

"Darling, I — I had no idea she was married to — I mean, we didn't know who you —"

The chairman didn't even look at her.

"My wife has never once asked me for anything," he said.

"Not my money.

Not my connections.

Not one single favor in six years of marriage." He paused.

"She never even told me her sister was getting married today."

A woman near the front row whispered something.

Nobody else moved.

Then the chairman reached into his jacket and pulled out his phone.

He made one call.

Three words.

That was all anyone heard before he ended it.

The groom's own phone buzzed in his pocket two seconds later.

He looked down at the screen — and whatever color was left in his face disappeared completely.
