Chapter 2: The Second Signature

Desmond’s face lost all color as I took the microphone.
“This is impossible,” he said.
“Wren doesn’t understand business.”
A few nervous laughs moved through the ballroom.
I looked at him.
“You’re right, Desmond.
I never understood why my husband needed six ‘strategy retreats’ with his communications director.”
Isolde quickly removed her hand from his arm.
“Whatever you think happened, this is a private matter.”
“The earrings you’re wearing are private,” I replied.
“The company money deposited into an account bearing your initials is not.”
Her fingers flew to the diamonds.
Desmond pushed toward the stage.
“Reginald, stop this nonsense.
Those payments were authorized expenses.”
Reginald didn’t move.
“Then you’ll have no objection to answering a few questions.”
Corvina’s general counsel placed a sealed folder on the podium.
Desmond froze when he saw the name printed across it.
I opened the folder, but before I could speak, the forensic accountant leaned close and whispered, “Ms.
Ashcombe, there’s something else.
We found a second signature.”
“Whose?”
He turned toward the ballroom.
Isolde suddenly grabbed Desmond’s sleeve.
“Don’t let her say it.”
That was when I realized Desmond wasn’t the only person who had betrayed me.
