Chapter 8: The Vote That Broke Him

The accountant disabled the remote connection with twelve seconds remaining.
By afternoon, copies of the drives were secured with the court.
Desmond called another board meeting before he learned we had succeeded.
He sat at the head of the table.
“I’ve obtained commitments from two lenders, provided Wren resigns from Corvina and Ardent.”
I entered with Celeste, Reginald, Mara, Isolde, and the forensic accountant.
Desmond’s smile faltered.
“Isolde, sit down.”
“No.”
“Fletcher?”
“He tried to erase the server,” I said.
“Hotel security detained him until investigators arrived.”
Desmond looked at his attorney.
“Stop this meeting.”
His attorney closed his briefcase.
“I advised you to disclose every relevant account.
You did not.”
“You work for me.”
“I represent Corvina, not you.”
The attorney moved to Reginald’s side.
I placed account records before each director.
“I.A.
Strategic received three million eight hundred thousand dollars.
Isolde was listed as owner without her knowledge.
Fletcher created account 0417 using documents Desmond took from my home office.”
Desmond rose.
“That is speculation.”
“Then let’s hear your voice.”
Celeste set the recorder on the table.
Desmond’s recorded words filled the room: “Once the server is gone, Wren will carry the blame.
You will say she ordered everything.”
Harlan stared at him.
“You told us those emails were authentic.”
“They are.”
The accountant changed the screen.
“The messages were created on Fletcher’s laptop.
Their timestamps were altered, but the server preserved the original metadata.”
Desmond pointed at Isolde.
“She organized the vendor payments.”
Isolde stood.
Her hands shook, but her voice did not.
“You directed every invoice.
You promised me a division, then placed my initials on a shell company.”
“You signed expense reports.”
“Because you said they covered legitimate communications work.
I have every message you sent.”
Desmond turned to Celeste.
“You signed the transfers.
If I fall, you fall with me.”
Celeste pushed her chair back.
“Then I’ll answer for what I did.”
“You’ll lose your trust.”
“Better that than losing what remains of my sister.”
I looked at her.
She met my eyes without turning away.
Desmond reached for the laptop containing the evidence.
Reginald closed it first.
“Sit down,” Reginald said.
“You don’t command me.”
“No,” I replied.
“The board does.”
I called the motion to remove Desmond as chief strategy officer, cancel his compensation package, and refer the financial records to investigators.
Harlan raised his hand first.
The other directors followed.
Desmond looked at me across the table.
“You think this makes you powerful?
You hid your success from your own husband because you were afraid I’d surpass you.”
“I hid it because every achievement I shared became something you tried to reduce.”
“I gave you twelve years.”
“You took twelve years.”
The boardroom door opened.
Two financial investigators entered with the hotel manager.
One investigator addressed Desmond.
“We have an order requiring you to surrender all company devices and financial records.”
Desmond looked at Isolde.
“Tell them she planned this.”
“No,” Isolde said.
“I’ve lied enough for you.”
He turned to me as the investigator collected his phone.
“You’ll be alone when this is over, Wren.”
I picked up my wedding ring from the table.
“I was alone while married to you.”
His face twisted.
“You’ll regret humiliating me.”
“No, Desmond.
I regret how long I mistook your contempt for love.”
The investigator gestured toward the door.
Desmond paused beside me.
“You were never the wife I needed.”
I opened my hand and let the ring fall onto his severance papers.
“And you were never the man you pretended to be.”
The door shut behind him.
Before anyone could speak, Isolde’s phone lit up.
She read the message and went pale.
May you like
“It’s from Fletcher,” she said.
“He claims Desmond moved the missing money somewhere none of us will ever recover.”
