Chapter 1: The Last Bruise Was Always Meant to Be Seen

At the altar, my groom crushed my hand and whispered, "From now on, you belong to me.
Know your place." I smiled, peeled off my wedding gown in front of four hundred stunned guests to expose the bruises he'd hidden for months, then turned toward the church doors—because the last witness I had invited was about to destroy his fortune, his reputation, and every lie he'd ever told.
The first bruise Adrian ever gave me disappeared beneath the sleeve of an expensive silk dress.
The last one was meant to be seen by everyone.
His fingers dug into my hand as the priest spoke.
Cameras flashed.
Guests smiled.
His mother, Celeste, sat proudly in the front row, watching me with the satisfaction of a queen claiming another victory.
"From today on," Adrian whispered through his perfect smile, "you belong to me.
Don't ever forget your place."
I looked at him and smiled back.
"You wanted a wife," I said quietly.
"Now meet my witness."
For eleven months, Adrian carefully convinced everyone I was fragile.
He chose my clothes.
Read my messages.
Controlled my friendships.
Every violent outburst ended with flowers, diamonds, and carefully rehearsed apologies.
When he sl@pped me, he blamed stress.
When he locked me inside the wine cellar overnight, he called it discipline.
"You make me do this," he always said.
Celeste was even worse.
After noticing fingerprints around my arm, she simply adjusted my sleeve.
"A powerful man deserves obedience," she whispered.
"Don't embarrass this family."
They believed I stayed because I was too frightened to leave.
The truth was much simpler.
I stayed because I needed time.
Before meeting Adrian, I had worked as a forensic accountant investigating financial crjmes for a federal contractor.
He loved introducing me as his "former bookkeeper."
He never cared enough to ask what I actually did.
Three months after our engagement, I discovered loan guarantees carrying my signature.
Except...
I had never signed them.
Then I found six more.
One evening Adrian caught me reviewing company records.
He smiled, kissed my forehead, and took the papers away.
"Numbers aren't your concern anymore," he said.
"Your only job is standing beside me and looking beautiful."
I lowered my eyes.
Not because I was intimidated.
Because he'd just confirmed exactly what I suspected.
He had been using shell companies registered under my name to conceal fraudulent loans.
His plan was simple.
Marry me.
Merge everything.
Leave me carrying the blame when investigators arrived.
So I quietly gathered every piece of evidence.
Bank transfers.
Forged contracts.
Medical reports.
Photographs.
Hidden recordings.
A private ledger concealed behind a false wall inside his study.
And one final file proving his fortune wasn't merely built on fraud.
It had been st0len from someone else entirely.
The priest asked whether anyone objected.
Silence filled the church.
Adrian tightened his grip.
"Good girl," he whispered.
I glanced toward the entrance.
The doors slowly opened.
My attorney walked inside first.
Behind her came two detectives.
A federal agent.
And the woman Adrian had spent the last decade convincing everyone was gone.

What happens when those doors open and Adrian sees her face?
