Chapter 2: The Woman Who Was Supposed to Be Gone

Part 2 ⬇️

Adrian's hand went cold around mine.

I felt it before I saw his face change.

The color drained from him so fast that the guest in the third row actually gasped.

"That's not possible," he whispered.

But she was already walking up the aisle.

Her name was Rosalind.

His business partner's widow.

The woman whose estate had been quietly absorbed into Adrian's holding company eighteen months after her husband's funeral.

The woman whose signature appeared on a transfer document dated three days before she was declared legally d*ceased.

Except she was very much alive.

And she was carrying a manila envelope.

"Adrian." Her voice was calm.

Almost gentle.

"I think the guests deserve to hear how you forged my death certificate."

Celeste shot to her feet.

"Remove her.

Someone remove her right now."

Nobody moved.

Adrian turned to me, and for the first time in eleven months, I saw something in his eyes I had never seen before.

Fear.

"Whatever she told you," he said quietly, "it's a lie.

She's unstable.

She's been—"

"She's been hiding," I said.

"Because you told her if she came forward, she'd end up like her husband."

The church went completely silent.

Then one of the detectives stepped forward and asked Adrian to please not leave the building.

Rosalind set the envelope on the altar.

"Open it," she said to me.

"Page four.

Read the name at the bottom."

I reached for it.

---

What was on page four — and whose name did it carry?

The full truth is darker than anyone in that church expected.
