Chapter 1: The Chair Beside the Restroom

At the anniversary dinner I was paying for, my daughter-in-law laughed in front of more than fifty guests and announced that there was no place for me—then pointed toward the restroom.

I waited for my son to stand up for me, but Steven only glanced away from his phone as though my humiliation were simply another part of the evening's entertainment.

Amber placed one hand against her chair.

"Go eat in the bathroom, Margaret.

You're already used to cleaning up after everyone."

Uneasy laughter rippled through the room.

None of them appeared to remember that I had paid for the private hall, the musicians, the orchids, the wine, and the five-tier anniversary cake—or that Steven's entire lifestyle relied on the company card I had allowed him to use.

I straightened my ivory dress, walked outside without saying another word, and called my lawyer.

I tightened my grip on the phone.

"Put plan B into action."

"Tonight?"

"Tonight.

Stop every transfer going to my son."

By the time I reached home, messages from Steven were already flooding my screen.

"Mom, what did you do?

The card isn't going through.

Fix this immediately."

Not one message asked whether I was okay.

After midnight, Steven appeared at my door, clearly shaken and demanding that I restore everything before Amber faced any further embarrassment.
