Chapter 2: The Message on Steven’s Phone

I kept the chain on the door.
“Did you come to ask if I’m all right?”
Steven’s face hardened.
“This isn’t about you.
Amber’s parents were watching when the card was declined.”
“So her embarrassment matters, but mine doesn’t?”
“Mom, stop being dramatic and restore the account.”
My hands trembled, but I didn’t open the door.
“That account belongs to my company.
You were allowed to use it for business expenses—not parties, holidays, and whatever else Amber wanted.”
Steven went pale.
“What do you mean, whatever else?”
Before I could answer, my phone rang.
It was my lawyer.
“Margaret, I found something,” he said.
“Someone submitted documents this morning to transfer your shares to Steven.”
“That’s impossible.
I signed nothing.”
Steven stepped back, but a message flashed across his phone before he could hide it.
AMBER: Did she discover the papers?
Don’t let her call the bank.
I stared at him through the narrow opening.
“What papers, Steven?”
His mouth opened, but no words came.
Then Amber’s car pulled into my driveway—and she wasn’t alone.
Who arrived with Amber, and what was hidden in those papers?
