Chapter 2: The Envelope on the Table

Bastian scrambled to his feet, one hand pressed against his cheek.

"You can't do this.

That child is your bloodline."

Alaric didn't even look at him.

"Is he?"

The room went completely still.

Bianca stepped forward, her voice dropping low and dangerous.

"What are you saying?"

Alaric reached into his jacket and pulled out a folded envelope.

He set it on the table without a word.

No one moved.

Serena recognized it immediately.

Her face went pale.

Bastian's eyes locked onto the envelope.

"Where did you get that?"

"I've had it for three months." Alaric's voice was calm.

Completely calm.

"I was waiting to see what kind of man you really were."

Bianca snatched the envelope before anyone could stop her.

She tore it open.

Her eyes moved across the page once.

Then again.

Her hand began to shake.

"This…

this isn't possible."

Bastian crossed the room in three steps and ripped the paper from her hands.

His face changed the moment he read the first line.

Faye touched his arm.

"Bastian…

what does it say?"

He didn't answer her.

He looked up at Alaric.

Something close to fear moved behind his eyes.

Alaric looked back at him without blinking.

"Now sit down.

Both of you.

Because what I'm about to say next cannot be unsaid."
