Chapter 2: Someone Had Already Been in My Cabin


I lay completely still when I heard his footsteps on the stairs.
My heart was pounding so hard I was sure he'd hear it.
But I kept my eyes closed.
My breathing slow.
My body limp.
Graham leaned over me and whispered, "Almost time, sweetheart."
He actually stroked my hair.
I didn't move.
He left the cabin.
I heard him talking quietly to his father on the deck above.
"She's out.
Give it another twenty minutes."
I pressed my face into the pillow so they wouldn't hear me shaking.
Then I heard my mother-in-law say something that stopped everything inside me.
"Make sure her phone goes with her.
Her father's been calling."
My father was already trying to reach me.
Which meant the call I made on the emergency device — the one I thought no one knew about — may not have gone through.
I reached under the mattress where I'd hidden the device after the call.
It was gone.
Someone had already been in my cabin.
Someone knew I was awake.
And downstairs, the three of them had gone completely silent.
