Chapter 1: The Envelope With His Name On It

Caleb thought the worst part of the night was seeing his five-year-old daughter crying in front of a room full of people who had laughed at her.

He was wrong.

After the guests were sent home, Sadie refused to let anyone take away the small gray suitcase she had brought from foster care.

She sat on the edge of the bed with both hands around its handle, still wearing the sweater that had been soaked at the party.

Then she looked at Caleb and asked something he was not prepared to answer.

"Did Mommy know you?"

Caleb felt the question settle somewhere deeper than anger.

He had been told Mara disappeared years ago without ever telling him she was pregnant.

He had built an entire explanation around that belief because it was easier than admitting how little he understood about the woman he once loved.

Sadie opened the suitcase.

Beneath a stuffed rabbit and several folded shirts was an old photograph of Mara.

And underneath it—

an envelope with Caleb's name written across the front.

The paper was worn at the edges, as if someone had opened it, closed it, and changed their mind many times.

Caleb reached toward it.

Sadie pulled it back.

"Mom said this was important."

For the first time that night, Caleb forgot about the woman in red, the guests, and the scandal downstairs.

Because if Mara had written to him before she passed, then one question mattered more than anything else:

**Why had he never received it?**
