Chapter 2: The Lady With the Silver Ring

Caleb sat very still.
Sadie was watching him the way children watch adults when they sense something is wrong but don't have words for it yet.
"Can I see it?" he asked quietly.
She thought about it.
Then she placed the envelope in his hands.
His name was written in Mara's handwriting.
He would have known it anywhere.
But the envelope had already been opened.
Someone had read this letter before him.
He pulled out the single page inside.
The ink was faded but the words were clear.
*Caleb.
If you're reading this, then someone finally let you.
I tried to reach you.
I tried more than once.
I need you to know that.*
He stopped.
Tried to reach him.
More than once.
He looked up at Sadie.
"Did your mom ever say who she gave this to?"
Sadie nodded slowly.
"The lady with the silver ring."
Caleb felt the room tilt.
He knew exactly one person who wore a silver ring on her right hand.
She had been at the party tonight.
She had hugged him at the door and said she was so glad he was finally moving forward.
She had been in his life for years.
And she had known about Sadie — and about this letter — the entire time.
