Chapter 1: The Night Everything Broke

Champagne hit my face like a sl\*p.

It burned my eyes.

Ran down my neck.

Soaked the dress I had spent two hours putting on.

She didn't even flinch.

"Maybe now you'll finally understand where you belong."

The ballroom froze.

Glasses stopped mid-air.

Every expensive smile turned into a stare.

Richard grabbed my arm like I was the problem.

"Don't make a scene, Claire."

His voice was quiet.

The kind of quiet that used to mean protection.

Now it just meant control.

"You've embarrassed yourself enough."

I looked at him.

Really looked.

"I embarrassed myself?"

She stepped in closer.

Pearls.

Perfect hair.

That little smile she saves for people she thinks are already finished.

"You were never supposed to be part of this family."

Then, softer, meaner:

"Why don't you leave before you ruin my night?"

I caught her wrist as she reached for the cake knife.

"Let go of me."

"No."

I didn't plan it.

I just moved.

Her face went into the cake.

White frosting.

Yellow sponge.

The whole pretty lie collapsing in one shove.

She came up gasping.

Cake in her hair.

Cake in her mouth.

Richard was on me in two seconds.

"Have you lost your mind?"

I tore my arm free.

"Never touch me again."

The doors swung open at the far end of the hall.

Two men in black.

And then her.

The woman who hadn't spoken my name in years.

She didn't look at the cake.

She didn't look at me.

She looked at him.

"Don't say another word, Richard."

My voice came out small.

"Mother?"

Who is she — and why did she come back now?
