Chapter 2: The Envelope on the Table

She walked through the ballroom like she owned every inch of it.

Maybe she did.

She stopped three feet from Richard.

Didn't rush.

Didn't raise her voice.

"I said don't speak."

Richard's face went the color of old ash.

I had never seen him afraid of anything.

Not once in four years of marriage.

But standing there under the chandelier with cake still dripping off his wife's pearls, he looked like a man who had just run out of road.

"Eleanor." His voice cracked on the second syllable.

"You weren't supposed to be here tonight."

"No." She looked at him steadily.

"That was rather the point, wasn't it."

It wasn't a question.

One of the men in black stepped forward and handed her a thin envelope.

She didn't open it.

She already knew what was inside.

She finally turned to me.

Her eyes moved to the champagne still drying on my dress.

To the red mark on my wrist where Richard had grabbed me.

She took it all in without a word.

Then she said quietly:

"Claire.

Come stand beside me."

Richard took one step forward.

"Eleanor, whatever you think you know—"

"Sit down, Richard."

He sat.

The whole room watched.

And then she reached into her coat and placed a second envelope on the table.

Thicker.

Sealed with a law firm's stamp I recognized from somewhere I couldn't yet place.

"This ends tonight," she said.

I looked at her.

At the envelope.

At Richard's hands, which had started to shake.

"What is that?" I whispered.

She didn't answer me.

But the woman with the pearls and the ruined hair did.

She laughed.

Short and sharp and ugly.

"Oh, you really don't know, do you."

---

What's inside that envelope — and what has Richard been hiding from Claire all along?

May you like

The full truth is darker than anyone in that room expected.
