Chapter 2: The Name on the Screen

Noah's voice came down the stairs, clear and steady, nothing like the crying child Ryan thought he knew.
"I have it all recorded.
Every word.
Every h*t.
I'm sending it right now."
Ryan's face went white.
"What did you just say?"
The officers were already inside.
Two of them.
A third stayed by the door.
Ryan turned to me, his voice dropping low.
"Tell them it was nothing.
Tell them we were just arguing."
I didn't answer.
One of the officers stepped between us.
"Ma'am, are you hurt?"
Before I could speak, Noah appeared at the top of the stairs.
Eight years old, still in his pajamas, my phone gripped in both hands.
"She's hurt," he said.
"I have proof."
Ryan laughed — that same bitter, ugly laugh from before.
"He's a kid.
Nobody's going to listen to a scared little kid."
The officer looked at Ryan, then back at Noah.
"Son, can you come down here?"
Noah walked down every step without hesitating.
He handed the officer my phone.
Ryan's laugh stopped.
On the screen was a live call — still connected — and a name neither of us expected to see.
