Chapter 1: She Thought Planting That Necklace Would Destroy Me

She Thought Planting That Necklace Would Destroy Me.

She was almost right.

---

Emily had worked in this mansion for three years.

Three years of early mornings, late nights, and never once touching anything that wasn't hers.

Tonight was supposed to be different.

A celebration.

A formal dinner.

Dozens of guests filling the grand foyer with champagne and laughter.

Emily moved quietly through the room, invisible the way staff always are at these events.

She didn't notice Vanessa watching her.

She should have.

---

It started with a scream.

"She took it!"

Every head turned.

Vanessa stood in the center of the foyer in a sleek black dress, one perfectly manicured finger aimed directly at Emily.

The room went still.

Emily froze.

"My necklace." Vanessa's voice dropped to something colder.

"The diamond one.

It was in my room.

And now it's in her bag."

Emily glanced down at the brown leather handbag sitting near the entrance table.

Her bag.

"I didn't—"

"Don't."

Vanessa crossed the marble floor in four steps.

Before Emily could finish the sentence—

The sl*p came hard and fast.

The crack of it echoed off the walls.

Emily stumbled backward.

Her hand flew to her cheek.

The burning spread instantly.

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

Guests stood with their glasses raised halfway, watching like they'd paid for front-row seats.

"You st*le from this family." Vanessa's voice was perfectly controlled now.

Quiet.

Certain.

"After everything you were given."

Emily's eyes filled.

"I swear to God.

I didn't touch anything."

"Then explain why it's in your bag."

---

The handbag was brought forward.

Margaret — the family matriarch, the woman Emily had served loyally for three years — stood at the edge of the crowd.

Her face was unreadable.

The gold zipper was pulled open.

Black velvet.

A diamond necklace resting inside it like it had always been there.

The gasps moved through the room in a wave.

Emily felt the floor tilt beneath her.

"I've never seen that before in my life."

"Of course you haven't." Vanessa smiled slightly.

Just enough.

"That's what they all say."

Emily looked to Margaret.

Margaret looked away.

That was the moment Emily understood how completely alone she was.

---

Then Daniel spoke.

He'd been standing near the back of the room, watching everything without expression.

He was Vanessa's husband.

He was supposed to be on her side.

"Play the security footage."

Vanessa's head turned sharply.

"Daniel—"

"The cameras cover the entire foyer." His voice was flat.

Unhurried.

"Every angle.

Every second.

Play it."

A beat of silence.

"That's not necessary," Vanessa said.

"We all saw—"

"Play it."

---

The screen on the far wall came to life.

Black and white.

Timestamp glowing in the corner.

The footage was from forty minutes earlier.

The foyer, nearly empty.

Guests still arriving.

Staff moving in the background.

Emily visible near the far wall, carrying a tray.

And there — near the entrance table — was Vanessa.

Alone.

Standing beside Emily's unattended handbag.

The room watched.

Vanessa glanced over her shoulder.

Once.

Twice.

Then she reached into her own clutch.

Removed the necklace.

Unzipped Emily's bag.

Placed it inside.

Zipped it closed.

Walked away.

The whole thing took eleven seconds.

---

The footage ended.

The room didn't make a sound.

Emily stood with her hand still pressed against her cheek.

She wasn't crying anymore.

She was watching Vanessa.

Vanessa, who had gone completely still.

Vanessa, whose perfect composure had just been dismantled in front of forty witnesses.

Daniel turned to face his wife.

When he spoke, his voice had no anger in it.

That made it worse.

"You framed her."

Vanessa opened her mouth.

Closed it.

"The camera got everything." He didn't look away from her.

"Every second."

Still nothing.

No explanation.

No excuse.

Not even a denial.

Just silence, and the slow collapse of everything Vanessa had built in that room.

---

Emily didn't move.

She stood exactly where the sl*p had left her.

The accusation was gone.

The truth was on the screen for everyone to see.

But the burning on her cheek was still real.

The fear she'd felt when that bag was opened — still real.

The moment Margaret looked away — still real.

A camera could prove what happened.

It couldn't reach inside Emily and undo what those sixty seconds had cost her.

---

And the question nobody in that room was asking yet—

*Why Emily?*

Of all the staff.

Of all the people in this house.

Why had Vanessa chosen her?

The answer was something far worse than th*ft.
