Chapter 2: The Name Nobody Was Supposed to Say

The silence didn't last.
Vanessa found her voice first.
"That footage proves nothing." Her chin lifted.
"I was checking the table.
Anyone could see that."
A guest near the back laughed.
Just once.
Short and sharp.
Vanessa's eyes moved to find them.
Found no one willing to meet her gaze.
Daniel hadn't moved.
"You put the necklace in her bag, Vanessa.
Forty witnesses just watched you do it."
"I want her gone." Vanessa's voice cracked for the first time.
"Whatever the camera shows — I want her out of this house tonight."
Emily finally spoke.
"Why?"
The word was quiet.
But it cut through the room.
"You've never spoken to me.
Not once in three years.
You don't even know my name without checking the staff list." Emily's hand was still at her cheek.
"So why me?"
Vanessa went very still.
"You don't get to ask me questions."
"Then answer mine."
Margaret's voice.
Low.
From the edge of the crowd.
Everyone turned.
The old woman was holding something.
A photograph.
Small.
Old.
Edges worn soft.
She looked at Emily the way someone looks at a face they've been trying to forget.
"How long have you known?" Margaret asked.
Emily frowned.
"Known what?"
Margaret's hand trembled.
"Who your mother was."
