Chapter 2: The Letter Beneath the Lining

Part 2 ⬇️

The officer pressed play.

The room went completely still.

On that small screen, Evelyn Whitmore moved through the nursery like she owned it.

Calm.

Deliberate.

She lifted Oliver's inhaler from the case, dropped it into her handbag, and snapped it shut.

Then she picked up the lamp and threw it herself.

Ryan couldn't speak.

The officer turned to Evelyn.

"Ma'am, is this your bag?"

Evelyn's chin lifted.

"I want my lawyer."

Ryan stepped toward her.

"You let him struggle to breathe.

Your own grandson.

Three years old."

"I was protecting him," she said.

"From her."

"You staged all of it." His voice cracked.

"The folder.

The camera.

The documents.

How long have you been planning this?"

Evelyn said nothing.

Then Maya spoke from the doorway, her voice barely above a whisper.

"Ryan…

there's something else."

She was holding a single sheet of paper the officers had missed.

It had slipped beneath the wardrobe lining.

It was a letter.

Dated eight months ago.

Addressed to a family court judge.

And at the bottom was a second signature — one that made Ryan's hands go cold.

Someone he trusted completely had known about this from the very beginning.
