Chapter 2: What Ethan Carried

Part 2 ⬇️

I crouched down to Ethan's level.

His little voice was barely above a breath.

"Grandpa steps on my toys when you go to work, Daddy.

He says big boys don't need them."

My hands went still.

I looked up at my father.

He didn't deny it.

He just crossed his arms and said, "I'm teaching him to be tough.

Someone has to."

My mother nodded like that was perfectly reasonable.

Four years old.

My son had been coming home with broken toys for months, and I'd assumed it was just accidents.

Normal rough play.

I'd never once suspected it was deliberate.

"How long?" I asked quietly.

Ethan held up four fingers.

Four months.

My father shrugged.

"You coddle him.

I'm doing you a favor."

I stood up slowly.

The ruined bicycle was still in my hands.

Then my wife stepped out of the house.

She'd heard everything from the doorway.

Her face was white.

"There's something else," she said.

Her voice was shaking.

"Show him, Ethan."

Ethan reached into his little jacket pocket and pulled out a folded piece of paper.

I opened it.

It wasn't a drawing.

It wasn't a note.

It was something I never expected to find in my four-year-old's pocket — and it changed everything I thought I knew about my own father.

---

What was on that paper?

What had my father really been doing all those months?
