Chapter 2: What She Was Told Never to Say

**— PART 2 —**

Roberto stepped through the doorway.

The box dropped from his hand.

Vanessa spun around.

For the first time since he had known her, she had no smile ready.

"Roberto." Her voice was controlled.

Smooth.

"This isn't what it—"

"Don't."

One word.

Quiet as hers.

But it stopped her completely.

He crossed the room and crouched down in front of Sofía.

He didn't speak yet.

He just placed his hand gently on her face — the way she always needed, so she could feel who was there.

Her whole body shook once.

Then she pressed into him.

"Papá…"

He held her.

He looked up at Vanessa over his daughter's shoulder.

"How long," he said.

Not a question.

A warning.

Vanessa lifted her chin.

"She spilled the wine.

It was an accident.

I was simply—"

"María." He didn't raise his voice.

"How long has this been happening?"

The silence that followed told him everything.

María's hands had gone still.

She was looking at the floor.

Her jaw was tight.

The kind of tight that comes from holding something back for a very long time.

And then Sofía whispered something against his chest.

Something small.

Something she had clearly been told never to say.

Roberto pulled back just enough to hear her.

She said it again.

His face changed.

Vanessa saw it change — and for the first time, she took a step back.

*To be continued…*

What Sofía whispered in that moment exposed a secret Vanessa never expected Roberto to find out.
