Chapter 4: What She Signed

Andrés arrived at seven.

He was a compact man with careful eyes and the habit of setting his briefcase on the table before he sat down, as if the documents inside needed to be present for the conversation to begin.

Roberto had known him for eleven years.

He had never called him before eight in the morning.

Andrés sat.

He did not open the briefcase yet.

"Tell me what happened."

Roberto told him.

All of it.

The living room.

Sofía's words.

What Vanessa had said about the gala, the partnership, what it looks like.

Andrés listened without interrupting.

When Roberto finished, Andrés opened the briefcase.

"Two years ago," he said, "you signed a cohabitation agreement.

Vanessa's attorney drafted it.

You told me at the time it was standard."

"I thought it was."

"It wasn't." Andrés set a document on the table.

"There is a clause here — Section 7, subsection C — that entitles her to a financial settlement if the relationship ends at your initiation without documented cause.

The number is not small."

Roberto looked at the page.

"How not small."

Andrés told him.

Roberto set the paper down.

"She planned this."

"I don't know what she planned.

I know what she signed.

And I know her attorney is very good." Andrés folded his hands.

"Roberto, if you ask her to leave without documented cause, she files within the week.

And she will win the settlement."

"Then we document the cause."

"That requires evidence.

Testimony.

Possibly María's account, if she's willing.

Possibly Sofía's, though I would strongly advise against putting the child through—"

"Not Sofía." Roberto's voice was immediate.

"She doesn't go near this."

"Then we need María."

A sound from the hallway.

Both men looked up.

María stood in the doorway.

She had a dish towel in her hands.

She was not pretending she hadn't heard.

"How long have you been there?" Roberto asked.

"Long enough." She came into the room and sat down across from Andrés, which was not something she had ever done at this table.

She set the dish towel on her knee.

"What do you need me to say?"

"Whatever is true," Roberto said.

María looked at him steadily.

"Then I need you to understand that I tried to tell you.

Three times.

Once six months after she moved in.

Once after Sofía's birthday.

Once in February." She paused.

"Each time, you were in the middle of something.

Each time, I thought — he'll see it himself.

He's a smart man.

He'll see it."

Roberto did not look away from her.

"I didn't see it."

"No," she said.

"You didn't."

Andrés had his pen out.

"María, I need to ask you some specific questions.

You don't have to answer anything you're not comfortable with.

But anything you can tell us — dates, incidents, exact words — will matter."

María straightened in her chair.

"I have dates," she said.

"I wrote them down."

Both men went still.

"I started keeping a record in February," she said.

"After the third time I tried to tell him and couldn't get through.

I wrote down what happened, what was said, what Sofía looked like afterward." She looked at Andrés.

"I have it on my phone.

Every entry has a date and time stamp."

Andrés looked at Roberto.

Roberto looked at María.

"Why didn't you show me this before?" he asked.

María was quiet for a moment.

Then: "Because I was afraid you wouldn't believe me over her.

And if you didn't — I would lose this job.

And Sofía would lose me." She held his gaze.

"I couldn't risk that.

Not for Sofía."

The kitchen was very quiet.

"Send it to me," Andrés said.

"All of it."

María picked up her phone.

Upstairs, a door opened.

Small footsteps crossed the floor above them — Sofía, awake, moving toward the bathroom with the careful confidence of a child who had memorized every inch of her world.

Roberto listened to those footsteps until they stopped.

Then he looked back at the document on the table.

"What else did she sign?" he asked.

May you like

Andrés reached into the briefcase again.

"That," he said, "is what I came to show you."
