Chapter 2: You Were Never Supposed to Come Home Early

I pulled my daughter close and told her to take her brother upstairs.
She didn't move.
She just stared at Vanessa.
"Go," I said.
"Now."
The moment they were gone, I turned around.
Vanessa had put her phone away.
She was standing in the middle of the room, completely still, watching me with an expression I had never seen before.
Not guilt.
Not panic.
Calculation.
"You need to calm down," she said.
"Where are the papers, Vanessa?"
"There are no papers.
Your daughter is six years old.
She doesn't know what she's saying."
"She knew where to look."
Something shifted behind her eyes.
I walked past her toward my office.
She followed, staying close.
Too close.
When I pulled back the corner of the floor panel, my hands were shaking.
There was a folder inside.
I opened it.
The first page was a photograph.
My first wife, Elena.
Smiling.
Dated three weeks before her accident.
The second page was a phone record.
Vanessa's number.
Called four times that same night.
I looked up slowly.
Vanessa was standing in the doorway — and she was smiling.
"You were never supposed to come home early," she said quietly.
Then her phone rang.
She glanced at the screen and her smile disappeared completely.
She whispered one word before she answered it.
*"How?"*
